Seasonality of insect pests on Sesbania cannabina fields located in Taiwan

Abstract: Sesbania cannabina (Retz.) was sown once every 2 weeks on an Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) farm, in Tainan from March to October in both 1996 and 1997. Species of pests, their seasonal occurrences and their population densities were surveyed on Sesbania plants 2 months after sowing, and once a week thereafter. Twenty-one species of insect pests belonging to 15 families and 6 orders, and 3 species of unidentified tetranychid mites and 2 species of snails were recorded. Among them, 10 species, bean pod borer (Maruca vitrata ), Cryptophlebia ombrodelta , Lampides boeticus , Trichoplusia ni , scarab beetles (Anomala expansa and A. cupripes ), southern sting bug (Nezara viridula), smaller green leafhopper (Edwardsiana flavescens ), Aphis craccivora, and Megalurothrips usitatus, attacked the leaflets of shoot tips, stems, and flowers. These pests were more common than the others, and occurred from May through December. The bean pod borer ( Maruca vitrata ) was recognized as the most serious pest.
